Isago (砂) is a major character of Mermaid Saga, appearing in the story “The Village of the Fighting Fish”.
Biography[]
She is a mermaid with legs coming from a place where there are many of her kind who feed on mermaids living in the sea. Three years ago, she was nabbed by the pirates of Sakagami Island who murdered her husband and became the wife of their headman. As she became pregnant from her former husband and needed to eat mermaid flesh in order to give birth to a healthy child, she told her new husband about mermaid flesh granting immortality to encourage him to find a mermaid and went as far as hiring young men including Yuta at the port to search for one.
Later at the port, she finds Rin’s brother with a mermaid scale then Yuta together with Rin from Toba Island, and as he denies having found a mermaid, she stabs his right hand with a hair pin then buys that hairpin and shamelessly puts it in Rin’s hair as a token of apology, much to Rin’s anger. She then shows up on Toba Island during the night with a sword and upon seeing Yuta’s wound healed confirms that he is immortal but disbelieves his statement that he had found a mermaid long ago and stabs Rin’s father to force a horrified Rin to go find the mermaid in the hope of healing him.
Although slashed by Rin who then goes to find the mermaid with Yuta just as she expected, she doesn’t die and the next day precludes a pirate about to rape Rin shocked to see her still alive and reveals her pregnancy to her. Thereafter, while the Sakagami pirates feast then fight Rin and Yuta, she just drinks sake and waits until they become desperate and eat mermaid flesh causing them to die or transform into lost souls, and finally gets to eat the mermaid flesh she needed right after. And as the Sakagami pirate leader begins to transform after believing he was lucky for a short time, she mocks him saying he shouldn’t have kidnapped her and reveals her true nature and purpose to him then climbs towards a cliff, smiles mockingly to the deformed leader trying to get to her and dives into the ocean, turning her legs back to a mermaid’s tail and delivering her children.
